Youth Voices in Concert at St. George's Beckenham

A Saturday morning concert at St.George's Beckenham

St.George's parish church in Beckenham high Street welcomed youth voices on Saturday 18th October. The audience enjoyed the excellent solos and group pieces and some superb instrumental playing rounded off this informal performance as part of St. George's ongoing local Saturday music events.

John commented:youthvoices-at-st-georges-2013-1

"You excelled yourselves today!  Lovely to hear those super voices in today’s
concert.  Although we had a small audience, everyone came because they
wished to hear you and wish you well.

Some wonderful solos…and the tone is excellent!"

monochrome photographs by Chris Kendall of the concert here

Happy 20th Birthday to Beckenham Junior Choir!

We have celebrated 20 years of Beckenham Junior Choir this month with an informal concert given by the Junior Choir followed by a lovely party afterwards!

Current members of the Junior Choir and Youth Voices were present together with many friends and well-wishers!

The all-important birthday cake was baked for us by our Chair of Committee and was enjoyed by all - our thanks to Elizabeth!

The audience were delighted by some amazing solo performances, including some of our youngest singers, and there were some old favourites sung by the whole choir including "Amazing Grace" and "Keep the Home Fires Burning".

Beckenham Junior Choir is thriving and numbers well over 40 members now, as many as we've ever had!

Youth Voices, our choir for over 11's is 20 strong currently and we are always pleased to welcome new members.

It is the start of an exciting year for the Choirs, culminating in our Grand Birthday Concert, to celebrate 21 years of the Junior Choir
and 10 years of Youth Voices, at:
St. Paul's Church, Brackley Road, Beckenham on Saturday, 5th July 2014.

We look forward to welcoming old friends and new over the coming months.

Spring Charity Concert at St. Barnabas

Spring Charity Concert at St. Barnabas Raises Almost £700 for the Evelina Children's Hospital!

Our first ever Charity concert was held on Saturday, at St. Barnabas Church in Beckenham; in aid of the Evelina Children's Hospital in London.  The charity has particular significance for us, as two of our longstanding members have had life saving surgery and ongoing medical treatment there. We managed to raise  almost £700 due to the amazing generosity of the audience!  Thank you to everyone who supported us!

There are some photographs of the rehearsals by Nick Charles here.

Both Beckenham Junior Choir and Youth Voices sang beautifully accompanied by the fabulous Beckenham Concert Band!  There was an exciting mix of music from the rousing El Relicario performed by the Concert Band, which enlivened the audience, to the traditional nursery  rhymes sung by the youngsters in the Junior Choir and  there was a smile on everyone's face as "The Pink Panther" was performed by Beckenham Concert Band!

Speaking after the concert, John Hargreaves, Musical Director of the Beckenham Concert band, said that "the choirs sang really well, and with such enthusiasm and commitment.  It's so good to see young people making music so positively."

Father Tim Hide, Vicar of St. Barnabas also congratulated us on

"A brilliant evening for everyone visiting St. Barnabas... wonderful to see the church being used by so many people coming through the doors who said they didn’t even know the building was there. Please pass on my thanks to the children, they sang very well and looked the part, enjoying their work."

Coffee concert at St. George's Beckenham

A morning concert on Saturday the 16th March in a rainswept Beckenham!

The conditions outside were awful but Beckenham Junior Choir were a ray of sunshine inside the church at St.George's....

"Well done to the Junior Choir for their lovely singing this morning!  You
gave a great concert at St. George's, Beckenham.  I certainly think so
(although I am biased), but lots of others told me so, too!

We had music by Benjamin Britten and by his musical editor and local boy
from Beckenham Carey Blyton, whose music we like to feature regularly.  Four
of Carey's poems were also recited, showing his typically mad sense of
humour, which goes down so well with young people (of all ages!).

Thanks to everyone who took part, singers (including some very capable
soloists), instrumentalists on guitar (Mark) and piano, Stuart Kale for
preparing the soloists to the usual high standard.....and also Jo Clegg, our

Of the pianists, thanks go to my good friend Nick Jones for accompanying
songs in place of Sophie, who has been ill this week.  The other pianists
were Elizabeth (who leaves us in May) and Megan and Anna  The last two are
members of our young Choirs, who have promising futures.

A final word of thanks to Peter Jones, our host at the Church, who always
manages to pay us for coming!  His encouragement is hugely appreciated and
we enjoy performing in this magnificent building."

Seaside Concert at Broadstairs!

Singing by the Seaside- summer concert at Holy Trinity Church, Broadstairs!IMG 0003

A terrific concert on the 6th July at Holty Trinity Church Broadstairs - and people were delighted with the exceptionally high standard of the music, solos
(some very challenging), songs for the Choirs and the instrumental music.

It was also wonderful to have Chris on guitar again alongside the other players and we were made very welcome by Frances from the Church…

And what a lovely building for the sound of the music!

There are again some wonderful photographs by Nick Charles, of the choirs in rehearsal and the concert performances and some of the church and beach too!

Youth Voices informal concert

Saturday 13th March - Sweeney Todd at large in Penge!

A performance of Carey Blyton's Sweeney Todd formed the centerpiece of Youth Voices informal Winter concert.

Narrated by Junior Chioir parent Jo Clegg, the suite of songs was performed with vigour and with some fine solos to tell the gruesome tale.... Ivan's ghoulish Mwaaahahaa! will be resonating around the rafters of the beautiful Holy Trinity church for many months! Sophie accompanied the choir on an unfamiliar keyboard with great skill and confidence.

A beautiful instrumental flute solo of Elgar's Chanson de Matin was performed by Miriam. There followed some fantastic solo singing of musical show favourites by Emily, Hannah and Megan with Robyn singing the moving My Immortal by Ben Moody.

Ben - our Ben that is! was joined by Miriam on flute and Mark on guitar, and sang the Last Rose of Summer very tenderly and with feeling. The audience appreciated the musicality of the entire evening and, this more intimate concert showed off the talents of Youth Voices singers, in a wonderful space and setting. The warm welcome from Revd. Nick Read and all at Holy Trinity means it is a privilege to be able to sing here. Thanks to all who helped prepare and run the evening.

Our Summer Concert Sunday 9th June 2013

From John:

"Well done in the Park this afternoon! Last time (2011) it rained and rained. This time it was cloudy and cool, but the rain stayed off until later! And what a great audience!

You sang very well and there was a good mix of songs from the two Choirs, including some wonderful solos.
Thank you to all the singers, including the parents and friends who joined in “Lead me, Lord”. It was lovely to welcome several new Junior Choir members to their concert; they had joined us at the “taster session” just before half term. I was impressed that Youth Voices had a 100% attendance today!
Thank you to the pianists, who kept it all ticking along. Thanks so much to Ben and the sound team for their early arrival to prepare and to all those who cleared up after we finished.
We can now relax and look forward to the Broadstairs concert on July 6th. now, just under four weeks away."
John .
