Winter Concert at Elmers End

A Sunday afternoon concert at Elmers End - 3rd February

A warm welcome awaited the Junior Choir for a relaxed, informal programme of music at the United Reformed Church at Elmers End. A big "thank you" to Eunice and to Revd. Bill Bowman, the Minister, who gave their time to support us and to make the Church available.

Lots of solos and songs for the whole Choir, mostly of a "fun" nature.  Titles included "There was I, waiting at the church", "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner",
"When the red, red robin", "Island in the sun".....but also Psalm 23 to plainsong, so a wide variety of styles.

It was good to see not only George and Elizabeth Godsmark, who play regularly for the Choir (and are only with us until the summer, when they leave school, now being eighteen!) but also their sister Laura, who played a couple of piano solos.  This is the Church which they attend weekly, so they were really our hosts! We now boast three younger pianists too, Niamh, Megan and Anna, who all took part alongside Mark on guitar.  Amy also played guitar with mark in one song.

Thanks to many parents and friends for their part behind the scenes. Especial thanks to Ben and Ivan on the sound system.  We still need volunteers to help us in this department.....please come forward if you can assist.

Anyway, a really good afternoon!  Congratulations to all the musicians!

Carols for Christmas!

On Saturday morning, members of Beckenham Junior Choir braved the rain and sang some wonderful favourite carols for Christmas, outside Sainsbury's in Beckenham High Street!  It was a lovely way to get into the festive spirit and shopppers were very appreciative, stopping to listen to the children's beautiful singing and very generously donating to our charity collection buckets!  In the end, we raised over £100.00, which is to be donated to the Evelina Children's Hospital in London (part of St. Thomas' Hospital) to which the choir has a particular link; as it is where two of our members have received treatment over the years.  A fantastic achievement and a wonderful start to the Christmas season!  Well done to all the singers and thanks to the parents to came to support and help on the day!

Singing for the Olympic Torch

On the roundabout....

What a wonderful morning I've had with a lot of my best friends, singing at Beckenham Roundabout!

An amazing experience and I am exhausted. But we ought to do it every week, because it was such fun, wasn't it?

A really big audience...

The singing was very enthusiastic and we had a lovely captive audience. One of the best bits was singing "Bananas in pyjamas" as the big lorry came past with "Bananas" written over it!  It was a genuine coincidence.....I hadn't planned it and I didn't even notice the lorry until it was leaving the roundabout!

(Hopefully we can find a photograph to put here later if you missed it! Some of you may know how big a fan of buses I am - so this photo will do for now!)

A lovely video clip...

The Beckenham Business Association's Jackie Groundsell sent us a link to an article featuring a video of "England Swings"

So, well done to you all and I know that those who were away would have been with us if the dates hadn't clashed for them.

A big "thank you" to Elizabeth and George for playing for us and to various parents for their help, including Rob for the sound and Sergei for transporting equipment.

Have a great holiday and I'll see you the friends that you recruit.....on September 12th!

The photos here are from Cliff Watkins, Zosia Edwards - a former choir member and Choir parent Mary Davies. We will add more - as we are sent them. We are still looking for a good shot of the banana lorry as it trundled past us.... Please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ( Mark ).

Beckenham Junior Choir has had several new members join in the last few weeks which is fantastic and it was lovely to see them taking part at the concert so soon after joining!Best wishes also go to two of our pianists, George and Elizabeth Godsmark, who turned 18 on Sunday, 2nd December - Happy Birthday to you both!

A Fanfare for Penge and West Beckenham!

Our Summer finale was a fabulous occasion and it was great fun to work with the Crystal Palace Band again and with Royston Primary School Choir for the first time!fanfare for penge 2012 -byv

There was truly something for everyone, with the smile-inducing "Bananas in Pyjama Trio" sung by the Junior Choir and Royston Primary School Choir to the spooky "Frankenstein" performed by Youth Voices and the mellow "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" sung by the whole Company which included a beautiful solo by Bonnie Callagham!

The Royston children made a big contribution and a HUGE sounds for their number -  well done to them!   After the concert, Esther Moorey, Head of Music at Royston Primary school, spoke with enthusiasm of their participation in the joint event:

"It was great fun to be involved in the concert - wonderful for our children to experience such a variety of music and performance. Also for me - it's good to know what is going on in the local music scene. I really enjoyed joining in with Berkley Square at the end - it's been a while since I was in front of an audience!"

Our thanks go to Canon Derek Carpenter, who kept the whole thing going and gave us a lot of support by his links between the items.

Well done to Cliff Watkins

Finally, well done to Cliff Watkins, who masterminded the entire project.  Cliff has a great passion for local people and their lives and this event was a wonderful celebration of local life!

was really good to see so many newer children taking a keen party in the
songs and more parents than ever wanting to assist in different ways.

A Brief Look Through The Archives

Beckenham Junior Choir was established in 1993 to provide an opportunity for girls and boys aged six to eleven to enjoy music making away from a school environment and to perform different styles of singing in a variety of venues. At least a dozen schools are usually represented. The Youth Voices began in 2004 for the 11+ age group. It gives a continuing role for older children and gives extra scope and a wider range of music for us all to enjoy.
